Temple Shalom Brotherhood Annual Scholarship Program

 

Scholarship Program:

The award seeks to recognize a Jewish boy or girl of high school or college age who is a member of Temple Shalom and who demonstrates exemplary leadership, serves as a role model and impacts the community in a way that strengthens the Jewish identification of his or her peers. The objective of granting the award is to encourage youth to assume a responsible role in Jewish life and to make a life long commitment to the continuity of the Jewish people.

Eligibility:

The Program is open to High School students and College undergraduates who are members of Temple Shalom and who are children of a Temple Shalom Brotherhood member*.

Award Criteria:

·        Leadership: Demonstrates initiative, creativity, drive, consistency, integrity, service, role model

·        Jewish Identity: Jewish knowledge and learning, Jewish practice

·        Impact: Contributes toward others' Jewish identification and involvement

Time Line and Process:

  • Annual Program period runs from September-August (i.e. September 1, 2005 through August 31, 2006)

  • Applications due: January 31 of each year

  • Awards announced: Annually at Brotherhood Shabbat Services

  • Scholarship Review Committee comprised of 5 Brotherhood members, of which 3 are members at large and 2 represent the Brotherhood Board.

·        Recipient(s) required to provide written essay (letter) discussing the benefits and lessons learned as well as making a 10-15 minute presentation to the Brotherhood at a scheduled monthly breakfast.

* In the event that there are no adult males as members of the household, the requirement to be a child of a Brotherhood member is waived.
