A core section of our mission statement commits Temple Shalom to engaging in Tikkun Olam, tangible actions for the betterment of our world. Throughout our history, Temple Shalom and its Rabbis have been known for a commitment to both social action and social justice.
Through our involvement with the Roxbury Food Pantry and the Morristown Soup Kitchen, we help feed the hungry. Through our Youth’s participation in Midnight Run, our Temple’s hosting of Family Promise clients and our Brotherhood’s continuing engagement with Habitat for Humanity, we help bring comfort to the homeless. Through our support of such things as JNF projects, we care for the needs of our homeland. And through our annual Making a Difference Day, we both teach our community about and engage them in a wide variety of community service projects.
We take pride, as well, in our Rabbis’ deep involvement throughout our history in such things as supporting the State of Israel, helping the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel, engaging in the fight for racial equality and criminal justice reform, standing up for LGBT rights, and battling the scourge of modern slavery.
If you are interested in getting involved in one of our existing social action projects or wish to bring new social justice issues to our community, please contact the Temple office at 973-584-5666 and we will connect you with our Social Justice Committee.
