Home Prospective Members

Welcome to Temple Shalom!

We are a vibrant, growing community, with many opportunities for you to enjoy your religious life.  Temple Shalom is a reform congregation in Western Morris County servicing 30+ communities in the area.  Join us for our worship services and our many educational and social events and you will experience the spiritual and intellectual richness of our community.  Lead by Rabbi David Levy, and Cantor Kathy Barr, we seek to engage our membership in all synagogue activities while meeting their individual needs.  In addition to our main sanctuary, the Soffin Chapel is an intimate room for smaller worship experiences.

In seeking to continually enhance the worship life at Temple Shalom, we have developed a new worship calendar that we expect will provide our community with a variety of meaningful worship services.  The first Shabbat of the month will continue to be an early FAMILY SHABBAT generally led by one of our Religious School classes.  The second Shabbat of each month is called SIMPLY SHABBAT.  This will be a typical Temple Shalom Erev Shabbat service from our new prayer book with a topical sermon.  SHABBAT KESHET (Rainbow Shabbat) will take place on the third Shabbat of each month.  This new initiative will allow us to offer variety in our worship each month with an ever changing rainbow of offerings.  Offerings might include special speakers, a Jazz Shabbat, a prayer book-free multi-media service, a multi-plex style Shabbat (multiple simultaneous Shabbat experiences) or a thematic creative service led by one of our affiliates or committees.  On the fourth Shabbat of the month will be our MUSIC SHABBAT.  Each month this Shabbat service will alternate between ROQ SHABBAT and CHOIR SHABBAT, ensuring that these beloved Temple Shalom traditions continue to occupy a special place in our Shabbat evening worship.  In the months in which there is a fifth Shabbat, we will offer an EARLY KABBALAT SHABBAT with service that begins at 6:15 pm.

Our outstanding Religious School engages both children and adults in learning about our heritage.  Cory Sue Hermann, director of our Religious School, leads a strong and vibrant group of dedicated educators that educate over 350 students a year.  Our program includes grades Kindergarten – 2nd grade for both members and non-members of our congregation.  While, our 3rd grade through B’nai Mitzvah program is followed by Temple Shalom Academy.  This year we will continue our very successful program that engages our 11th & 12th graders to continue their religious education with a curriculum that provides social action and educational experiences.  Both Rabbi Levy and Cantor Barr are an integral part of our Religious School faculty.

Congregational Shabbaton dinners, Renaissance, L’Chaim Club, Brotherhood, Sisters of Shalom and Youth groups are just a few of the programs which bring the Temple Shalom family together.  Our Social Action committee makes sure we stay involved and educated about Israel, Darfur, the “greening” of our communities and housing the homeless each summer.  These are just a few of the committees that provide congregants the opportunity to get involved in projects that interest them.

In late 2009 we are eagerly anticipating breaking ground for our renovation project “Chadeish Beiteinu”, Renewing our Home which will enhance our physical building and our spiritual souls.

Temple Shalom begins the year with an outdoor service.  This year we will be having our outdoor service on September 4th at 6:30 PM at Horseshoe Lake in Succasuuna.

Prospective members are invited to join us for a complimentary Family Shabbaton dinner by contacting the Temple office to RSVP or to obtain more information.  New members and prospective members are also invited to a brunch on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 10:00 AM.  Please RSVP to the Temple Office at 973-584-5666 by September 10.
