Our Evolution

Temple Shalom – Roxbury Reform Temple was founded in the summer of 1960 by ten very committed and determined Jewish families.  Within three years, the congregation had established a religious school, and formed a Sisterhood, a Brotherhood and a Youth Group, while holding services at “borrowed” facilities.

By 1965, construction began on our present four and one half acre site on South Hillside Avenue.  To keep pace with the growing membership, the original structure was expanded in 1976 and again in 1988-89.  The building now houses a spacious Sanctuary, a large and attractive social hall, kitchen, administrative offices, library, youth lounge, parents' lounge, twenty classrooms and a large meeting room.  Those ten original families have grown to well over five hundred! In 2005 our growth continues and Temple Shalom has built a new chapel which may be used for wedding ceremonies, baby naming and small minyans, dedicated to Sandy and Rabbi Emeritus Joel Soffin.

Rabbi's Welcome

I am pleased to share with you some of what makes Temple Shalom such a special place. We have always seen ourselves as being one big family.

Through our Caring Committee we help each other in times of hardship,  illness and of mourning. We do the things that our families would do if they lived close by.

We also have a strong commitment to Social Action.  Several times each year, we house the homeless in our building.  We work monthly at the Morristown Soup Kitchen. We helped to create the local Inter-Faith Social Action Committee. We have raised money for flood victims and for an Ethiopian Jewish family to buy an apartment in Israel.  We have helped to build houses for the working poor.  We have even donated a cow to a kibbutz in Israel.

Our children are especially precious to us. We have four youth groups, beginning in Grade 3, and a college Outreach Committee which sends our students packages from home. Our children attend and participate in our services.

For adults we offer Torah and Bible study groups, Hebrew lessons, and the opportunity for adult B'nai Mitzvah.  Our Renaissance group offers an active agenda for empty nesters.  And we welcome the L'Chaim Club for Jewish senior citizens throughout the area.

All of this is done the “Temple Shalom Way”. It means that we focus first on people, that we try to meet the needs of our families in a caring way. Our goal is to pray, learn and celebrate together.

If you are not currently a member, we would be happy to welcome you to our Temple family. Please feel free to attend services and to meet us in person. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call me directly at 973-584-5666.
